Workshops with a Model

Learning How to See - Drawing from Life*

Using methods from the popular book by Betty Edwards, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this course will underline that drawing is a learned skill much like reading or riding a bike. To do this Dave Carty will break down drawing into five basic components and teach students a new way of “seeing”.  Contour, gesture, perspective and portrait drawing will be utilized to develop these five elements. A live model will be provided Saturday and Sunday.

Engage in an exciting, informative and creative weekend, sculpting clay into 3D and 2D (relief) sculptures. Using a professional live model for inspiration and subject matter, students will begin with a small, gestural clay study. Students will learn the importance of drawing for sculptural perception and reference. Through purposeful play students will sculpt a larger clay piece and, if time and energy permits, a small relief work.

Painting Objects: A Visual Exploration

This is a class for students ages 12 - 86! Transform everyday, often discarded, material into art with paint. Heighten or alter the meaning of anything's "thingness"!

Using acrylic paint, David Janzen will introduce participants to a variety of approaches to making 'shaped' paintings that operate on more than one physical level to be displayed on a wall or tabletop.

Intermediate Oil Painting: The Portrait

This class will create three portraits using non-toxic, solvent-free oil painting techniques using the portrait as source and subject matter.  Students will look at several elements and techniques utilized in oil painting. Some of these elements include; using a “Painterly” approach, working from general to specific, dark to light, transparent to opaque. Students will also look at the importance of value to create a sense of light and the importance of colour and intensity to create a sense of space.

The key to successful abstraction is knowing your subject in its true form first. Working with clay, from a live model, Sharon Moore-Foster will teach students to sculpt what they see and how to take their work to a new level through abstraction. Students will learn how to inject their own energy into their work and learn vital elements of sculpture such as contour, composition and form.

Comics aren’t just for kids – they are for big people too! This affordable class invites kids and their parents to explore their creative side. Students, both big and small, will learn how to create and illustrate your own original characters & turn them into a story. Students will learn about facial expressions and body movement, drawing animals, mythical creatures and 3D shapes!





Mommy’s Little Monster: 3-D Art Class with Dry Paper Mache

This is the class where imaginations can run wild! Students will start out by creating and drawing their own character and then take it to the third dimension with sculpture. Don’t worry, there is no messy glue-Just tinfoil, paper, tape and paint. Once the characters are complete students will make a diorama where the creatures will live.

Learn how to bind your own hardcover sketchbooks with amazing results, using supplies and materials you already have at home. This course covers folding multiple signatures, sewing, supporting and reinforcing the text block, and creating a hard cover with an inset.

Papermaking Workshop: The Basics

Not only is papermaking a fun experience for parents and kids, it’s also a great way to recycle waste into wonderful possibilities. Add dried flowers, scraps of yarn and even seeds. It all comes down to what you want. Experiment with different textures and colours while having fun expressing your creativity!
